Ear Infections and Ear
Aches tend to occur mostly in babies and children between the ages of 6
months to 3 years old. The reason that Ear Infections and Ear pain are
more common in children is due to the small size of the child's
Eustachian Tube Passageway. Earlier we said that the Eustachian tube is
responsible for providing fresh air into and out of the middle part of
your baby's ear. This area is referred to as the middle ear. As a baby
grows older their facial shape and structure will broaden and expand
allowing for the Eustachian tube to stretch and grow. This in turn
allows for more free air flow and for the excess fluid to be drained
from the the baby's middle ear.
Ear Infections and the
subsequent Ear Aches that follow are the by product of a small
Eustachian tube that has become inflamed. Bacteria begin to grow in the
dark and moist middle ear because of the congestion blockage which stops
fluid drainage and the free flow of oxygen from the babies middle ear.
Below are pictures of
the different stages of Ear Infection...

The nerve center that the teeth and the ear drum share are the same.
Because of this you may notice that your child will begin to pull on
their ears during Teething. This could be a sign of an Acute Ear
Infection. If you notice the second photo above, an Acute Ear
Infection is typically reddish in color. Always proceed with caution
because the Eustachian tube can be come constricted and inflamed for
various reasons.
