Lactation and Breast Feeding
Lactation is the secretion of milk from a mothers breast. This process will begin naturally within a few days of the your new Baby's birth. Once you begin lactation there are certain things that you will want to do so that your breast feeding experience will be easier.
Once you begin Lactation you will want to ensure that you and your baby are both able to relax in a comfortable position. I came across a funny illustration recently which typified how some moms may feel when trying to give lactation to their baby over the first few days. The picture showed a frantic mom sitting "upside down" in her chair as she tried to maneuver so that she could breastfeed her baby; it was very funny and it underscored how some moms may feel. Moms, it is possible for you to feed your baby and be comfortable at the same time.
That being said, getting your baby to latch properly is very important. Latching on properly helps to lessen sore nipples and it also ensures that your baby gets enough milk.
Don't Let Teething Or Biting Dampen Your Desire To Breast Feed!
Once your baby begins Teething you might begin to have second thoughts about giving up lactation and breastfeeding altogether. Stop, Stop I say... don't do it! I know how you feel, many mothers have felt just like you. "We have been there, done that, and got the "Teeth" shirt.
Teething is probably the main reason for the nipple biting. Your baby is looking for something to comfort and soothe its gums. Babies will grow out of this eventually. You can help them transition during this sensitive time by gently and firmly telling them no. Then, remove the breast from them briefly and reinsert the nipple. This can help to stop the biting as your baby realizes that you will remove their food when they do. Another idea that you can use is to pull your baby closely to your breast, gently blocking the nasal passage. Your child will then release your nipple so that air will flow freely giving them space to breathe.
